pretty good year

day 222

New Year's Eve is that time in which folks like to reflect on the current year and make unattainable goals for the coming year.  It's a silly ritual, but one that some folks do every single year.  Guess what, so do I.   Well, do reflect but I don't make any resolutions because  it's just unnecessary.

So Ginger Boy asked me the another night as we were drifting off to sleep to think about all the good things from 2010.  At first I could not think of one single good thing about 2010.  I could only think of all the bad things that happened and then like a big baby, I felt sorry for myself.  Then as I closed my eyes and almost cried myself to sleep,  I remembered an episode of This American Life that Ginger Boy and I watched about this man who basically had to depend on other people to take care of him because he was severely disabled.  Despite his disability, he made the best of his situation and he actually had a decent life complete with friends and family and a girlfriend who really loved and respected him.  So if this dude could find happiness and not complain so could I.  My life is actually not so tragic and it's actually been a pretty good year.

I am still sad that Jin and Sun died  on L O S T and I am even more sad that the show is over.  However, I revisit it whenever I want to through the magic of DVD and Blue ray.

So that is a pretty good thing.  One of my dearest friends was married this past spring to THE perfect guy for her.  I mean they are just adorable together and so much fun to be around.  I love them both very much and I really enjoyed their kick ass cool wedding!  That whole experience was a pretty good thing.  I lost a little weight which is always a good thing.  Ginger Boy got his shit together and THAT is a very good thing.

I saw Ani DiFranco in concert with my ISM and that was another good thing.

Oh and one of my friends who I always just considered a pal actually became a close friend, one I can trust with some of my darkest secrets (believe me, there are many).  That was not only a good thing but a wonderful thing.  Ginger Boy took me on a weekend getaway to a really creepy hotel but we ate cheese and drank Snapple and watched some dumb Vince Vaughn movie on cable and it was actually a very good thing.   I made a volcano this summer and it was better than Peter Brady's, wow that was good thing too.  Toy Story 3, Netflix, learning how to get rid of Stink Bugs, Ginger Boy decorating the Funky Anne Frank Room for my Birthday all were pretty good things.  Going to Ollie's Army night which I had not done in 2 years was VERY good and Ginger Boy taking me to The National Christmas Center as part of my Christmas present was awesomely good.    So many good things happened in 2010.  Sure there was a pile of shit to deal with every now and then but still, it was a pretty good year.

2011 will be much better because I am going to make sure I have more pretty good moments for another pretty good year.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

everybody is a critic including me

day 215

Christmas Eve is finally here and this is one day in which I am thankful that I don't have a close knit family because then I would have to participate in their ridiculous rituals.  The drinking has begun and the stench of dead shrimp hangs heavy in the air as they're all gathered around the dinning room table talking about what else, football.  It smells worse than the ladies room at CBGB's ever smelled.  If you've never been to CBGB's then you know not what I speak of but trust me, IT STINKS!    After several drinks, Rasputia will retire to her room to do whatever wildebeests like her do on Christmas Eve and she will force Sammy Davis Urkle and her young minions to scrub the house from top to bottom because she is getting a Christmas visitor tomorrow that is allergic to cats.
RIDICULOUS!  She never fucking cleans this dump but now because someone is coming over she  needs to impress them by not lifting a finger and making everyone else do her dirty work.  Give me a break!

So what does a lonely diabetic do on Christmas Eve?  Watch movies of course!  I have filled my weekends and some week nights during the month of November and December watching many Christmas movies and all the good TV specials I now own on DVD thanks to a lovely lady I once worked with who has since passed away. Now that they've all been watched it is time for movies that aren't necessarily considered "Christmas" movies but they take place during Christmas or have a notable Christmas scene in them so to me, they are Christmas movies.  Going My Way, The Bells of St. Mary's, Meet John Doe and It's A Wonderful Life all have Christmas scenes in them so of course they qualify as "Christmas" movies.  Classic and FANTASTIC Christmas movies that many folks think of this time of year so I will not bother to give you my review of those films, they all earn 5 PLUS stars in my book.

Here are my picks for films that make me merry around the holiday season in no particular order:

While You Were Sleeping (1995)

A darling little gem of a film starring Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman that takes place during the Christmas season.   Sandra Bullock's character Lucy has a crush on Peter Gallagher's character of the same first name who to me is basically just that, a real peter  or dick if you want to be so bold.  His uni brow creeps me out and you get the vibe that he is a real ass but for some reason she finds him attractive.  He ends up getting knocked onto some train tracks and Lucy saves him.  Peter is in a coma and his family thinks Lucy and he are engaged and they immediately welcome her into their family.  It's what Lucy needs because she has no family and well, I won't give much away but it has some touching moments and funny moments too.  What makes it a comedy worth seeing are all of the supporting characters.  Peter Boyle, Micole Mercurio, Jack Warden, Michael Rispoli and the wonderful Glynis Johns.  These characters make the film hilarious!   "New Year's Eve hasn't been the same since Guy Lombardo died." and Christmas isn't Christmas without viewing this film.  I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Trading Places (1983)

What the hell do stockbrokers, a ne'er do well and a hooker have to do with Christmas?  A LOT! The film takes place in Philadelphia during the Christmas season and the comic duo of Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd are worth gold!  Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder were originally scheduled to play the roles of Billy Ray Valentine and Louis Winthorpe III but it did not happen and personally I just can't see it.  Pryor may have  been able to pull it off but Gene Wilder is too gentle to play a regular old Mr. Snooty Pants like Louis.  The supporting cast of Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche and Denholm Elliot are OUTSTANDING and Jamie Lee Curtis does a nice job as well.    If you have not seen this film I suggest you check it out real soon.  I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.

Moonstruck (1987)

A'more is in the air during the festive month of December in New York City and Cher as Loretta Castorini is simply delightful in this Academy Award Winning role.  Loretta is a widowed bookkeeper who is engaged to "a big baby" of a man named Johnny Cammareri who is about to fly to Sicily to be with his dying mother.  Johnny wants to repair the "bad blood" between him and his brother Ronnie played so brilliantly by Nicholas Cage.

Johnny asks Loretta to call Ronnie and invite him to their wedding.  Once Loretta meets Ronnie the film gets even funnier.   Again, it is the supporting characters that make this film genius for me.  It is one of those movies you need to see more than once to get some of the subtle humor that you may have missed the first time time around.  If you watch the film with me  for your second viewing, I will gladly point out those moments as well as rattle off hilarious quotes as they happen.  Oh this film is FULL of memorable lines.  This is a 5 star film for me and one I watch several times each year.

Die Hard (1988)

Bruce Willis as Officer John McClane, need I say more!  It is perhaps the best "Christmas" movie EVER!

4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Evelyn(2002)

This is a blink and you'll miss it film that only played in 15 theaters in the USA in 2002.   The film opens in 1953 on Christmas Day in Ireland when Desmond Doyle, played by Pierce Brosnan is arguing with is wife over her shenanigans with another man.  Desmond's wife leaves him the following day to be with this man and she also leaves behind her 3 children.  The oldest one is her daughter Evelyn played with such heart and soul by Sophie Vavasseur. Because Desmond is currently unemployed and there is no mother to take care of the children, they are shipped off to two different Catholic orphanages by the authorities.   The film really has nothing to do with Christmas but it is a heart warming tale of a man's struggle to bring his children home.  Scenic Ireland and the background music add a richness to this film that gives off the vibe of some of those older "Christmas" classics I mentioned before.  If you love the Irish and their funny ways, you will enjoy this movie as much as I do.  I saw this movie on Showtime in 2003 and wore out my VHS recorded copy of it. So I recently rented it from Netflix and I am hoping Santa brings me the DVD for Christmas because I enjoy this funny and sappy film that is actually based on a true story.  I give it  4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Millions (2004)

Seven year old Damian's mother has just passed away and he seems to cope by using his vivid imagination.  Damian sees and talks to saints.  The audience gets to peer into Damian's world and it is magical.  Damian along with his father and older brother move into a new housing development and while emerged in one of his fantasies, Damian finds a large gym bag full of millions of dollars.  It is a touching tale with some humor and it's just so pleasing to the eye to watch.  Danny Boyle is one of my favorite directors because he has a unique way of telling a story and Millions is perhaps my favorite Danny Boyle film after Shallow Grave.  The movie earns 5 PLUS stars in my book!
Oh and it does take place at Christmas time and there are Mormons in it so now you MUST check this movie out!  In the immortal words of Damian, there is but one word to describe this film, "BRILLIANT!"

That's it folks.  Those are the "Christmas" films I enjoy this time of year.  I am sure I missed a few but these are the ones I must watch to make my Christmas feel like Christmas.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

Perhaps it will be a Merry Christmas

day 214

The Christmas Tree Saga of 2010 came to end last Saturday night.  I said "Fuck it!" as I so often do and decided to give an old lady a Merry Christmas after all.  Gee whiz, it makes me sound like I am a good person or something.  I was going to put her Christmas tree up with all of her fancy Irish Christmas decorations  and festoon her house with all the Christmas items she so dearly loves to display each year but with that new puppy and  the two kittens roaming about this dump I could foresee disaster. Instead I went out and bought her a smaller tree and some non-breakable ornaments.  Then I dug through her collection of Christmas ornaments to find a few others to add to the tree that would not break if one of those critters decided to smash into the tree during a playful romp.  I placed the tree on a shelf between two stereo speakers for extra protection from the friendly beasts.   Even thought it is breakable, I also put out her Nativity scene because she recently told me she was very religious.  She also loves Lawrence Welk but that has nothing to do with anything really.  I even put a few other decorations up to make the place look a bit more cheerful.

Some Christmas crap to make the dinning room more festive.

The finished result made the old lady very, very happy.  Sure it's not her tree but it was an act of kindness that touched her deeply.   It also produced a Christmas miracle of sorts because Rasputia decided to move the two noisiest and messiest birds into her bedroom.  WHOOP DEE DO AND HALLELUJAH!   I have been able to wake up when I wanted to wake up for the past 4 days instead!!  Perhaps it will be a Merry Christmas after all.  Hey, a girl can dream.

A very Christmasy hall table.

The moral of this story, if you really need one, is that you should fight the good fight and don't deny anyone of their own personal happiness. One great rock show can change the world, or just do nice shit for your mother because she may die tomorrow.  You just never know.  How guilty would you feel if that old lady spent her very last Christmas on this planet without a Christmas tree of her own to look at and enjoy.  That's a guilt I could not live with plus I love the old lady and I just want her to be happy.  It does make me happy when the folks I love are happy. But don't tell anyone because I don't want folks to get the wrong idea about me and think I am a nice person or something.

So take a long look at that Christmas tree, it may be the last one that you see.  Decorate your house in green and red cause some day you'll be dead.
Merry Christmas, Irish Queen!

Melancholy Christmas

day 206

I heard this song today and it reminded me of the first Christmas 23 years ago spent with a dear pal that has since passed.  It made me a little sad inside.  We loved The Pogues together and we simply adored this song.  We loved a lot of pretty things such as this one and this song means so much to me; to both of us.  He loved his needles more than anything for a long time and now he is gone. It sucks, but you just have to collect all the memories and wishes and move on.  "Happy Christmas you ass. . ."  I wish we had more together.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day.

My toys are better than Mr. Bean's

DAY 206

I am missing my Nativity scene and all the fun I used to have with it.
Mr. Bean has NOTHING on my Nativity scene action, I have better toys.

tying up loose ends

day 202

Day 202 is a bitter pill to swallow.  How did we get this far into this mess?  What's done is done and you can't really look back but you sure as shit can move forward.  This was my weekend for  tying up some loose ends and moving forward with my life.  As usual it won't be that easy, there are always stupid little road blocks that keep popping up and you have to try to maneuver your way around them very carefully so as not to upset anything.  I fucking hate that! Then in the background of all of this is Christmas.  I actually don't give a fig about the holiday season this year.  I still dig all the music, films and TV specials  and I even put up a little tree to help me sleep at night (don't ask, it just works for me) but the whole Ritual of Christmas for me has been dipped in shit this year so who really cares.  I won't spoil anyone else's Christmas fun because that's just plain mean but I also won't make an effort to participate in any of their activities because it just makes it worse for me.  Plus I am kind of sick of wearing a happy face just so others can enjoy themselves.  I do it all day long at work and that's just about enough for my tired worthless soul.

The Funky Anne Frank Room Christmas tree.  The Heelots haven't broken me yet!
What is really pissing me off right about now is a form of elderly abuse that is occurring in this dump.  The Others (hostiles, morlocks or The Heelots as I am calling them these days) won't allow the woman I call my mother to put up her Christmas tree!  Seriously, are we going to go to THAT level of meanness now?!!  I know it sounds silly to worry about such a trivial thing but I do because I still have half a heart left in me even if it is starting to turn black.  When I learned of this current law in the household I could have flipped my lid but I just made a few snide Hitler references and returned to my shoebox of a room to contemplate why people commit murder.  Denying a 74 year old lady the right to put up her Christmas tree would warrant  justifiable homicide in my book.   Not that I would kill anyone over it but if I read an article in the paper that said someone killed somebody because they wouldn't let an old lady put up her Christmas tree I would say "Let that person go free as a message to all the Christmas haters out there!!  BEWARE!!!"

I could say that the  old woman brought all this on her self by allowing a rather unsavory person to dwell in her humble abode but I also know the back story on the old woman and her situation so I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt.  Not just because it is Christmas but because she has racked up many winning points in her lifetime and she is after all a pretty decent human being.

GRRRRR  I am so fucking angry about this I could kick somebody.  I think I will just rattle a bird cage or two and teach them to say "BAH HUMBUG!" or "ALCOHOL IS FOR THE WEAK AND FOOTBALL AND WRESTLING IS FOR THE FEEBLE MINDED OF THE WORLD!"
That would really get those Heelots thinking!  If I sit on this anger any longer, I will explode!!
How can you deny a Christmas tree to anyone!  If they want it, let them have it.  It causes no harm to anyone.  If you don't like the way it looks then turn your head or just gauge your eyes out.  Hell, you are already blind to the world around you anyhow why not just take it one step further!
Oh yeah, I am MAD AS HELL right about now!  Who the hell do they think they are to dictate such a thing.  Names like Grinch and Scrooge come to mind but it does not even fit them because the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge actually saw the light at the end of the story and they had a major change of heart even if Ebenezer's change of heart was really for selfish reasons.  Revisit the book and you might understand what I am saying.

Maybe I am just putting to much effort into being angry over something that really has no affect on me personally but part of me can't let this one pass.  I can't let someone be mean to someone else.  It's just not right, no it's just not right at all.  If this were a movie, the ending would be so beautiful, the whole town would rally around the old lady and bring her a bigger and better Christmas tree than the one she has and they would decorate the place inside and out and everyone would hug and eat cookies afterwards.  There might even be some Christmas Carols sung. Oh I like that part the best!   Then I think if this were a Quentin Tarantino film there would be some machine gun action and big sabers thrust into the bad guys chests.  Heads would literally roll and perhaps an ear or two would be hacked off, and there would be a lot of blood.  We'd all remain cool and be little Fonzie's in this adventure.  Oh man, I want to see that movie!!
However,  life is not like a movie which really sucks so I just need to look at this rationally. Boy this is difficult to do.

Do I fight the good fight and go to bat for the old lady only to be knocked down and hated even more by the others or do I just ignore it and go about my business?  It's a tough call.  Either way there is going to be turmoil in the household and everyone will suffer at the wrath of Rasputia.  She is so mean!  That's why she has such bad breath!  First of all she is ALWAYS constipated so she is literally full of shit.  When you can't get that poop out you have stinky breath.    I don't feel one bit sorry for her, she deserves it!  Oh she tells folks she is not mean and she tries to act nice but deep down inside she is just pure evil!  I can't even stand it!!  In fact I should not have even said "they" or mentioned The Others because it is she who does not want the tree, the rest of that bunch don't care one way or another about a tree.  So why is she so against it?   Why?!!!!
All because she can't afford presents to put under the tree, that's the reason she doesn't want the old lady to put her tree up.   Well, WHO CARES!?!?!?   Jason Robards charater in The House Without A Christmas Tree had a fairly legitimate reason for not putting up a Christmas tree in his house.  But not having presents to put under a tree is no reason to not put one up.  Lame, lame, LAME!     (If you aren't familar with the film I speak of, then watch this clip below. Skip ahead to 5:09 for the real dramatic part!)

I don't need presents for Christmas in fact no one really needs any presents either.  People just want them and  I do believe I covered that topic a while back.  If there is a need for presents so you can have a Christmas tree then make some fucking presents.  Are you that stupid that you can't do that?  I believe everyone has some sort of creativity within themselves.  Some of us are more gifted than others when it comes to creativity but use what you have to make yourself and others happy.  It's really simple.  Put up the damn tree and be done with it!!!  Good grief!!!!!

I bet someone adjusted her car seat, that's why Rasputia is so against all things that make other people happy.

So here I am again trying to tie up loose ends before it's all over and there is yet another road block making things a bit unbearable.  A really stupid road block if you ask me.  I really wish I had no heart at all because if I didn't, I wouldn't be here right now.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

day 189

"he touches that sweet chord deep within my soul like no other
he is my soul brother; we two are insane
a friend when I need him and a guide through the pain
to make sense of it I just can't explain
if you knew how it was then you would understand how I  am just humbled by this one amazing man
love, pain, joy, anger and tears, his music is sweet candy for my ears
love him or hate him you can not deny his time here on this planet was certainly justified
oh sweet, sweet Jimi you sing to me and I thank you for all that you've given me"

26.11.10

the gods have spoken

day 188
I figured out WHY the stomach flu came a knocking at my door at 2:17AM yesterday, it was to distract me from what I am going to be missing this year, Black Friday.  Black Friday to the rest of America is the Shop Til You Drop day that I personally cannot get behind.  All that pushing, shoving and meanness just for a bargain is just plain wrong.  I love bargains but I am not going to kill anyone just get it. Seriously, it's not worth it to me at all!

Ever since I was 8 years old and mother gave me my very own Christmas tree to decorate, my Black Friday has consisted of decking the halls.  Over the years I have accumulated quite an array of ornaments and Christmas items from really good friends who are more like family to me.  I have been dedicated to this Black Friday tradition most of my natural born life and for me to just suddenly stop is a complete tragedy.
2009 Chrismtas tree.

2008 handmade ornament from a dear friend

It has caused a bit of a depression over here but I set up a plan of attack to distract me from what I am missing.  A major distraction! I planned a entire weekend filled with sorting, organizing and packing, packing, packing all the while thinking of life in a new place.  Life in a world without birds, oh I could write piles of poetry about it.  I was actually looking forward to diving head first into my new Black Friday project and even planned a little respite of seeing Toy Story 3 at the $2 movie theater with a friend who believe it or not has not even seen that film.  That thought alone makes me ill.

So when I went to bed on Wednesday night I was feeling cold, achy and very cranky.  I knew that something was a brewing but I was hoping it was just gas or even PMS.  I can have gas or PMS and still function.  I awoke at 2:17AM with this intense pain in my gut and a horrible headache. I sat in the bathroom with the garbage can in front of me waiting for something to come out.  I even sang my own version of "Come out, come out" from The Wizard of Oz just to get the ball rolling but alas, it did not work.  After a while the pain was too intense and yet I kept my composure and my humor was still in tact.  I painfully moaned for Ginger Boy's assistance.  When he arrived at the door I said in a most dramatic and believable way, "Oh my God, Oh my God, there is a baby in the toilet, a real live baby in the toilet!"  He believed me for a few moments and then I had to let him off the hook.   I didn't want to have to clean up his mess too.  If you have ever seen or heard of that Discovery Health Channel show entitled "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant!"  that scenario I just presented would have really made you giggle. 70% or all the births shown on that television program involve the mother sitting on the toilet with violent stomach cramps not knowing she was pregnant only to produce a baby in the toilet instead of a turd.
How stupid can one be?!
.

Real life re-enactment of a toilet birth.
It's a silly show and every once in a while Ginger Boy and I watch it and laugh.  I understand that every pregnancy is different but what boggles MY mind is that these women are not going to their gynecologist and getting checked out like they should be.  Maybe I am just more in tune with my body since I have an illness that requires regular doctor visits and the slightest change in ANYTHING sets off those panic alarms within me.  It pays to be over dramatic sometimes.

Finally close to 4AM the "McSpills", as one of my students calls it, came at full force.  I spent the whole day in bed after that, my bones aching at every turn.  It sucks when you're a restless sleeper and your bones hurt because it makes the pain even more intense.    When I am sick like this I always question why a good person like myself should be dealt such a mighty blow.  I back track and try to remember if I did anything wrong in the past few days to cause this to happen.  Then I think rationally and realize it's just one of those things.  Everyone gets sick and I am no exception not matter how groovy I am.  However, this time I think I am being sent a message from the Christmas gods to just slow down, be groovy and not worry about missing out on one of my favorite days of year.  Black Friday, the day I dedicate to whipping my place into shape and decorating to my hearts content.

I am going to listen to the Christmas gods and just take care of me this weekend and get done whatever I can without any rush or panic if things don't go smoothly enough.  If it gets done, it gets done and if it doesn't, there is always next weekend.  Plus, if I feel the need to decorate,  I have my classroom to whip into shape.
I think this year we need more silver and less red on that tree.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY, day.

14.11.10

The Most Interesting Time of the Year.

*Cue up several versions of Carol of the Bells to play simultaneously for this installment of my endless rant.*

Day 176
I've been trapped in this shoebox for 176, it just can't be but it's true.  I still can't figure out how I have survived 176 days without killing myself or someone else.  I must be growing sane in my old age because the younger version of me would not have been able to cope especially since we're in the midst of the holiday season.  I have always been a big fan of most holidays particularly the ones that occur in the "ber" months.  So imagine going from having your own space to decorate and celebrate in to basically having nothing more than a storage space to sleep and eat in.  It sucks but at least I have a roof over my head unlike many other folks on this planet.  I should be thankful and not even complain but knowing me, I will.  I think complaining is good for the soul, I really do.  I guess it's one of the reasons I am on the facebook.  I mean if you're going to complain you might as well have an audience.  However, facebook is another blog for another time.  Believe me, I could blog about facebook on a daily basis if I had the time.

As they say on TV where everything is perfect,"the holiday season is here."  The holidays make me crazy just like everyone else I suppose no matter what part of the house I am sequestered to.  You already know I had a shitty Halloween and Thanksgiving won't be much better.  I always enjoyed Thanksgiving because I love the idea of a family gathering together as one and being thankful they have each other.  Growing up I did not have that at all.  Oh we celebrated Thanksgiving with various family members before I hit the double digits but then as my father got deeper and deeper into his alcoholism we just did Thanksgiving at home and the holiday took on new meaning.  I would be thankful if we could get through the dinner without the old man getting smashed and making remarks about my weight or how worthless I was.  That never really happened and there was a period of time that I grew to loathe Thanksgiving.  I would barely touch the meal and wait until everyone was passed out from turkey overload  and just go eat in my room alone , counting the hours until Christmas officially began so I could sweep the unpleasant Thanksgiving memories under the rug.  Since becoming a vegetarian, I have had other issues with Thanksgiving but I still love the idea of families gathering together and being thankful for each other and what they have.  A girl can dream.

On Thanksgiving I watch Alice's Restaurant, Miracle on 34th Street and the Macy's parade on DVR so I can fast forward to the good parts.

I equate Black Friday with the scariest
of scary Christmas hymns, O Come, O Come
Emmanuel.

Nowadays Thanksgiving is passed over for The Big One; Black Friday.  Yes, Black Friday is the holiday between Thanksgiving and Christmas that consumers drool over.  I am not going to ramble on and on about all the madness associated with Black Friday but, I will say this, anyone who lives for Black Friday is a douche bag.  Do you really need all that shit?  Is it worth it to stand in line at 11AM on Thanksgiving day waiting for them to open the doors to Discount Willie's House of Tacky Bargains to open at 3AM? Will your friends and family disown you if you don't deliver what they desire on Christmas day?
If you answer yes to any of those questions then not only are you a douche bag but your friends and family members are douche bags too!

Present day Christmas is an over done holiday that would have Charles Dickens rolling over in his grave.   I have always loved that line from the Dickens book A Christmas Carol,  "Keep Christmas in your own way and let me keep it in mine."  Christmas means different things to different people and I respect that.   Yet we all have to suffer this time of year because we are constantly reminded that if we don't go overboard and buy or decorate the way others do then we are just not worthy of anything. It can be damaging even to the strong minded.

Everywhere you turn from the end of August until the end of December Christmas is thrown at you in various forms.  Like death and taxes, it is unavoidable even if you don't celebrate Christmas.   It just sickens me each time I have to venture out and I see all the stores festooned with enough tinsel to choke a hippopotamus.  That's a lot of fucking tinsel since a hippo can swallow a watermelon with one bite.

Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, I really do.  However I keep it in my own way just like you keep it yours.  I am a big fan of Christmas music, that is how I keep the holiday basically, because I just love music.   Whether it's a traditional classic like "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" to a silly ditty such as "Santa Claus Got Stuck in My Chimney" by Ella Fitzgerald, I play Christmas music in my "home" as often as I can because I dig it the most.   Hell, I even play that shit in April because I love it so much.  Most folks think that is just crazy.  So maybe I am not growing sane in my old age.  Whew, what a comfort that is.  If I lost my insanity then I would actually have to cope with this crazy world like everyone else.  BORING!
I like living in my magical land where Unicorns roam free, the Snapple rivers and popcorn mountains are inviting, cable, cell phone service, movies and menstrual products are all free.  Healthy food is affordable and Walmart is just a mere memory of the past from a time gone wrong, all toilets and urinals resemble Dick Cheney's head and Glen Beck is mute.  Then I make the mistake of stepping out of the FAFR door and it is a shit laden world that reeks of bird feathers and doom.

So back to the stores that are just decorated for an over rated holiday we call Christmas.  Man, it looks like Liberace exploded in the stores, it's too glitzy.   I like a little sparkle and glitter every now and then but there is such a thing as going overboard.   Don't get me started on tacky outdoor Christmas displays!  OY VEY!

"I'm a gonna have nightmares!"

"Full of grace, full of grace!"  is what I shout as I pass by displays such as this one.

I love Christmas for my own special reasons and I understand why the stores do what they do but it still annoys me.  Is the almighty dollar that important? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this a holiday about Jesus who wore a sack cloth and sandals not a fur coat and Gucci boots!  For a fellow who was born in an animal stable this is hardly a fitting tribute.  Then there is the whole Santa Claus thing.  I dig Santa as much as the next 4 year old but I think he should have his own separate holiday instead of stealing Jesus's thunder each year.  I know this sounds shocking coming  from one of the biggest doubters in Blog Land but this is how I feel man.

I find myself complaining about  this subject more and more  because Christmas has lost it's meaning over the years.  To the true believers, it still holds the same meaning of love and peace but to others it's just who has the bigger, and shinier objects.  I've said it before and I will say it again, we are all hairless apes attracted to shiny objects.  I can't say I have not been guilty of this because I love objects too.  Deep down I know that if I don't have the objects I desire I will still live another day, still have friends and a goldfish who love me and my world will be okay.  But I am guilty of wanting more.

This is the "more" that I speak of.

I have a wish list in my head and if Santa doesn't deliver, I won't lose my mind.  I mean seriously, I've been asking for world peace for over 25 years and Santa has yet to deliver and I'm still fine.  Not satisfied but okay.  How about you, can you say the same thing?  What would happen on Christmas morning if you woke up and there was nothing under your tree or in your stocking?  How would you handle it?  Personally I wouldn't care.  I would just be happy to have my funky Christmas tree all a glow as I watched one Christmas movie after another, a bowl of popcorn and some Snapple at arms reach with Snoopy and Ginger Boy by my side.  Oh if only my dog Spookie were alive then it would truly be a Merry Christmas.
I'm dreaming of getting the hell out of here this Christmas so I can decorate!
So it is the most interesting time of the year and we all have our wishes and complaints.  Keep your holiday season as you want to keep it.  I have one more month in this hole in ground and I don't  know where I will be on Christmas morning but I do know exactly what I will be doing; smiling because I have exactly what I need. Just like Eddie Cantor, the only thing I want for Christmas is just to keep the things that I've got.

Off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

DAY 168

Oh a sailor travels to many lands, any place he pleases and he always remembers to wash his hands so he don't get no diseases.

DAY 168

Minimal Effort

day 166

Just an update for those who inquired.   I put forth minimal effort and made the Halloween deadline.  It's not the best Jack-O-Lantern but it served it's purpose for the evenings festivities.  I will be counting the days until Halloween 2011.
To quote a dear friend "Next year in the Holy Land."

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

Skipping Halloween

Day 162

When I sit back and look at that number of 162 I want to punch someone.  Yeah, I am pretty pissed off these days but yet again this weak little girl keeps it all inside because what is the point of raising Cain about something you really can't do much about. When did I become so pathetic?  So here we are on day 162 of this animal urine stenched hell and everyone is watching football and ignoring one of my favorite days of the year, Halloween.  I think I fell in love with Halloween when I was 5 and my mom let me pick out my own Halloween costume instead of making something for me to wear that I really didn't want to wear.  I went as the shark from JAWS.  I had yet to see the film  but I knew that it scared the hell out of people and I that is what I wanted to do, scare the hell out of people.  I got tired of being a cute little girl and believe me, I was a cute little girl or so they told me.  Pictures don't lie but sometimes adults do.  However, in this case I gave them all the benefit of the doubt.

This is me at age 3, you be the judge of my "cuteness".

I could have cared less about getting candy, I just loved ringing doorbells and having folks marvel at my costume creations.  I also liked the fact that for one night I was someone else.  I wasn't my big sister's little sister, I wasn't the daughter of an alcoholic and I certainly wasn't that weird kid in class with mismatched socks  who had a unique taste in music and a vast knowledge of all those useless facts stored in her head that she knew would one day come in handy.  When I went out on Halloween I became whatever character I was dressed as and I  did a magnificent job of entertaining all that I came in contact with.  It was an escape that I could lose myself in.

Oh Halloween, I love just about everything about Halloween with the exception of the gory films they show on TV this time of year.  When did blood, guts and pea soup vomit become associated with Halloween.  I would much rather watch The Great Pumpkin or Mad Monster Party than that crap.  I like FUN Halloween with a little bit of the eerie stuff tossed in but the guts are not my scene man.  Halloween is carving pumpkins and then toasting the seeds later for mass consumption.  It's cool costumes and fun parties, bobbing for apples, slipping into unnecessary sugar comas, playing silly pranks and decorating your house.  Oh I love decorating I swear somewhere deep inside me is a gay man named Lance  SCREAMING to be released.  Yes, if I were a gay man my name would be Lance.

This year due to circumstances beyond my control I had to forgo the decorating and it has made me very sad.  Usually by now I have carved at least 3 pumpkins with plans to carve 3 more before the Trick or Treaters arrived.  I have not even carved one pumpkin.  The clock is ticking over here and I just don't even care.  I slipped into some sort of Halloween depression that I can't seem to shake and it really sucks.  I know the only thing that will bring me out of this funk is me.  No one else can help me but me and I usually do it so well but not this time.  I am starting to give up over here.  I did decorate my classroom because I didn't want my kids suffering because I was.  That would be mean to do to those little humans who bring me great joy in the mess that is my life.
I forgo drawing on my pumpkins before carving them.  I
just let my imagination flow.

I did purchase a decent sized carving pumpkin for $2.49 on Monday and I was so excited about it.  Excited because I got a bargain and excited because I had visions of carving my pumpkin with Ginger Boy filled with Halloween merriment.  That was a good daydream that never came to fruition because I lost my Halloween zest somewhere this week and Ginger Boy isn't one to try to drag me out of my funk.  He never really got into holidays the way I did and that's okay.  I still love him.

I made cupcakes for our class party.
The competitive side of me would usually challenge the depressed side and egg it on resulting in not only carving that pumpkin but going on a decorating spree that would have this dump looking fabulous. I wish I could find that competitive little bitch because she has out shined herself during many low points in my life.  Waa, waa, waa, I am a big baby this Halloween and I hate myself because of it!

T minus 2 hours to go and there is no candy to hand out, no decorations, no carved pumpkin and not even a Happy Halloween welcome mat for this evenings event.  The house does resemble The Munsters abode but that has nothing to do with the holiday at hand,  lately it always looks this way.    My dark and evil side thought about handing out cat turds to the children and telling them they were fun sized carob bars but that is too wicked and not how I roll in reality.   I could hand out birds, cats and dogs for Halloween and tell them it's PETA's way of celebrating this year.  Oh what joy I would have in doing that.

I tried to search for some Halloween inspiration by watching Halloween themed TV shows this week.  The Middle, Modern Family, Community (which was pretty amazing) and The Office.  I switched gears and went a little old school with  My So-Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, and Roseanne.  Nothing.  Not one of those inspired me.  Even Rosemary's Baby  and It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown left me feeling flat.  I think it's time to pull out the BIG guns because Poltergeist, The Crow and The Lady in White didn't even do it this year.  I think it's time for E.T.  That film always hits the spot this time of year.  My only fear is that it might be too late.   I am willing to give it a shot because it's my last chance and if it doesn't work then sad to say it folks, I will be skipping Halloween this year.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day.
