day 540
Another day locked in your cave, another day full of sadness with a hint of rage.
It's not self pity, it's more like self loathing. Hating the way you are is far worse than hating the way you look. You aren't as strong as you let on and you have the footprints all over you to prove it. You choose to be this way and you pay for your foolish ways. You aren't alone, others have it worse. You wish you could find them and form a club. If you said what you meant you'd be even more hated.
off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

Where Have All The Taters Gone?
day 535
It's been over a month and I finally found something to complain about again. It's not really a complaint more like a disdain for a certain activity this time of year. Sweet potatoes. Oh how I love them, and please don't call them yams because they aren't. I have been actively enjoying sweet potatoes over regular potatoes for the past 10 years. My love of potatoes in general probably began in the womb. Baked, mashed, boiled, fried, I just loved potatoes. Perhaps it's the Irish in me because the Italian in me doesn't care much for Italian foods. On October 21st 1986 when the Weird Al song Addicted to Spuds was released I thought for sure it was written just for me and my love of potatoes as any narcissistic spud lover would. When I began my adventure of improving my health many moons ago I had to give up all forms of spuds except one, sweet potatoes. I read that they are much healthier for you than standard white potatoes. I must admit sweet potatoes were never my favorite as a child because I only ate them at Thanksgiving and they were always covered with some sort of brown goo and pecans. It tasted more like a dessert to me and not a side dish. I didn't get any sort of satisfaction from my mother's Thanksgiving sweet potatoes. They weren't horrible tasting, they just didn't make me say "YUMMY!". So through experimentation I found that you can actually eat these tasty orange lumps plain.
That's right, Plain Jane sweet potatoes and oh my, my I could eat them forever. Oh my, my I only wish that I could. Occasionally I bake them with a dash of cinnamon or I slice them into french fries and bake them to perfection. I eat them with a salad for dinner or with a side of vegetables. Put these spuds on the grill and your burger eating pals will be oh so jealous!! Sweet potatoes are not just for Thanksgiving folks!
It is true that most folks just think of them as a Thanksgiving side dish and this where my disdain comes in to play. These once a year sweet potato eaters rob me of my precious main course every time Thanksgiving rolls around. I can't seem to find sweet potatoes anywhere this time of year and it is really annoying. If you're going to love something, love it all the way, not once a year. This is why sometimes in June I might watch Miracle on 34th Street because I love it all the way and not just once a year.
When I go to the grocery store and see the sweet potato bins empty I get a little pissed off. It's the same way men of the cloth feel when certain folks only show up for church on Christmas and Easter. It's not sadness it's general pissed offness! How dare they make a mockery of the church or the sweet potato in this instance.
The sadness comes later when I think of what these folks will do to the sweet potatoes they purchase. They turn them into a marshmallow mess or add the brown goo and pecans my mother adds to totally destroy the flavor of my now favorite potato. Some may even turn these taters into a pie. It is total sweet potato murder on a holiday in which it's central theme is not thanks but death. Lovely sweet potatoes side by side with a bird carcass and stuffing cooked in animal drippings, oh the thought of it makes me want to hurl in a major way. This just might get get me started on another topic, Needless Turkey Murder Day. To those Turducken eaters, kiss my vegetarian ass! I love you but not your meat.
So to all you Thanksgiving revelers I can only say this, think of those in need during this holiday. The few, the proud, the weekly sweet potato eaters. What will eat if you buy all the sweet potatoes for your Thanksgiving feast? If you answer egg salad I'll fucking slug you!
