day 626
So Whitney Houston died, and that is sad. Her funeral was all over the news stations today and even on the Gospel Channel. I myself was never a major fan of her music. While I agree that she had an amazing voice, I just wasn't a huge fan. Perhaps that why I did not weep when I found out she died. Plus the way they interrupted a Charlie Brown holiday special to tell us she died was a bit rude. It will probably make the "Things That Annoyed Me in 2012" list because here it is a week later and I am still annoyed. Check back with me August and see how I feel then.
Whitney had some really good songs that I enjoyed listening too but her most famous hit was my least favorite. I Will Always Love You just annoyed the shit out of me. It was beautiful, but it was EVERYWHERE! It was an Ear Worm too, and I don't like Ear Worms. Ear Worms interfere with all the other sound bites and information roaming around in my head and I think it angers them. I know they get pissed each time the Perfection game commercial from the late 70's invades their space. How do I know this you are probably asking. Well, each time that songs get stuck in my head I end up with a terrible sinus headache hours later.
Whitney's love song does the same thing. Dolly Parton is a good woman, and her original version of that song as well as Whitney's is lovely, but I don't want that shit in my head!! The only good version of that song was performed by my friend Matt (I can name him but his first name because I haven't seen him in many, many years). I worked at a place that had karaoke, and no it wasn't a bar. Every night Matt and I worked together about 10 minutes before closing, I would get on the PA system and make the closing announcement because I was the boss. Then I would turn off two rows of lights for a little ambiance and Matt would fire up the karaoke machine and take to the stage with microphone in hand. Dear sweet Matty Matt would belt out Dolly/Whitney's tune in a falsetto tone complete with real tears. However that version NEVER gets stuck in my head. It visits when I think of Matt but it's not an annoying Ear Worm. Bummer. I am sure Dolly and Whitney would have gotten a real giggle out of Matt's performance. Probably just as much as Sonny and Cher would have loved our version of I've Got You Babe. I was Sonny and his tall ass was Cher.
Whitney had her share of issues, and just like everyone else I imagine these issues lead to her final curtain call. Folks point the finger to her ex-husband but I point the finger to fame. If you don't have an easy breezy attitude and let it all roll off your back you just might get caught up in it all and deal with it the wrong way. That's how I see it, but then again, I could be wrong. Her voice was lovely but the best thing that came out of her mouth in my humble opinion was this:
and most importantly THIS:
I bid a fond farewell to Ms. Houston and my sincere condolences to her family, friends and many, many fans. It's really sad and really shitty too that she had to leave the planet so soon. I just hope that when Bill Murray dies his corpse receives all the fanfare and allocates as Whitney did. All the news channels and Comedy Central should show his funeral. Actually I hope I go before Bill because I can't imagine a world without Mr. Murray. It's bad enough that the world goes on spinning without Richard Pryor and George Carlin, but without Bill Murray I have nothing.
off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!
