Fix You

Day 252

I have recently been obsessed with a movie called Young@Heart.  I was fortunate enough to see it in the spring of 2008 when it played in a local theater for one week. Sadly the good films only play for one week around here.  The following spring I saw it again when someone downloaded it for me off the Internet and again it struck a chord in me.  Recently a  good pal loaned me her DVD copy she bought at Ollie's Bargain Outlet for 3 bucks.  HOW DID I MISS THAT?!!?!  Oh that's right, I don't buy DVD's anymore because I have Netflix.  Well anyhow, I have been watching this movie over and over again every chance I get. It's about a senior citizen chorus that sings rock-n-roll, punk rock and other popular songs.  I find the whole concept to be simply delightful because I love most forms of music.  I know what it is like to be a part of a chorus and watch the song just come together so perhaps that is  another reason why I love this movie so much.  However, I find myself loving the people in the chorus a little more than their actual performance.  There is something about the elderly that makes me smile and I really get a kick out of them.  The same way I get a kick out of children or retarded people.  ( I know I should say mentally challenged but I prefer the old fashioned word, retarded.)  Old folks are very easy to love in my humble opinion.  Each time I watch this movie there is one moment, one song I just can't seem to get out of my head.  I just wants to stay there for some reason and it's okay because I really the dig the song.

For the past 2 months now sad thoughts have been swimming around in my head.  The old lady has not been well and I can't stop thinking about her.  In the past 4 years her health has slowly declined and in the past 6 months things have just become worse and I worry.  I worry when someone is capable of making changes to improve their health but for some reason they just don't do it.  I shared my thoughts with 3 people.  One agreed that this could be the year the old lady leaves us.  Another said she has enough life in her to go on for another 10 or 15 years and the third one offered to pray for her because whether she lives or dies it is in God's hands.  I can't say that any of their words really comforted me but that song from YOUNG@HEART has been my only source of comfort.  Even if it has always made me sad, somehow it comforts me.  Fix You by Coldplay has always been a lovely tune I enjoyed but nowadays I prefer the version Fred Knittle sings in YOUNG@HEART.  The video is unavailable to share so you need to click on the link to view it.

Yesterday the old lady was admitted to the hospital because she was having difficulty breathing. She claimed she had bronchitis but I knew it was her congestive heart failure, a condition she has been doing battle with for almost 13 years now.  It took a little convincing but I was able to let her go in an ambulance to the hospital.  She is still her funny, slightly feisty self and hopefully she will be back in full force because I don't want 2011 to be her last year here.  She still hasn't seen Toy Story 3 and I know she is looking forward to the movie The Help because she enjoyed the book as much as I did.  Plus she owes me at least one more Birthday since she forgot my Birthday last year.  It is tough when you really love someone and you want so much to help them but you can't help them until they start to want to get help.

Thoughts, prayers and meditations are welcomed at this time.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!

"I Died Honey."

day 251

I've been away for a while, just too much on my mind to really tell anyone about. I have a lot to say but I am at a loss for words right now. Does anyone else ever feel this way?  I am sure there are many.  I really despise the winter season because I always seem to let it get the best of me. I get really depressed. SURPRISE, SURPRISE!  On the outside I can put on a happy face and act like everything is just groovy.  I am good at that acting thing.  Deep down I am just battling a lot of stuff right now and not sure where to go or what to do about it all.  So rather than bore anyone with all the details of the mess that is me I will just lighten the mood with this.  What the hell did Ricky Gervais do that was SO wrong?  I thought he was funny and really did no real harm.  If Hollywood types take themselves that seriously then they are in the wrong business. I am not looking forward to the Oscars this year because the two hosts may be lovely people but I would much rather see a comedian host the show.  I will still watch the show because I've been watching every Oscar broadcast since I was 5 years old.  I only ever fell asleep twice during an Oscar broadcast and that was due to illness in 1999 and 2007 and not boredom.  I always record while I am watching just in case I fall asleep.

Other than that, there isn't much to say.  I could complain about the same old stupid stuff but it's getting kind of old and I am thinking of shutting down this forum and moving on.  Oh there was one more thing.  Aunt Patsy died. She was retarded.  She died on January 7th but I didn't find out until the 22nd  Oh how my mother's family is in such great communication with each other.
Usually when someone you love dies you cry but I haven't cried yet.  In fact, all I keep doing is laughing.  Patsy was the main source for a lot of my comedy routines growing up.  The cool cousins and a few of the hipper Aunts would fall over laughing when I would imitate my Aunt Patsy.  I wasn't making fun of her, I was just imitating one the funniest characters I knew.  Sure she was "retarded" or a little slow as my Nana called her but to me she had a sharp wit.  It may take her a while to get a knock-knock joke but she had the keen ability to find simple things funny, including herself.  That's one of the main reasons I loved her so much.  It's also one of the main reasons I dressed up as Aunt Patsy for Halloween 1998.  For those that knew her, they were in stitches* when I entered the room at the my Halloween shin-dig, they knew who I was before I even opened my mouth.  Those that did not know her still got a giggle because Patsy was funny.

I talk about her every day!  I haven't seen her in a  few years but I think about her every day and I will continue to talk and think about that hilarious woman until the day I die because she makes me laugh as much as Bill Murray but in a different way. Her favorite word was "honey".  Her standard greeting was "Hiya Honey."  She would say things like, "Oh don't do that honey. .  ."   I bet if she appeared to me as a ghost (a concept I still have trouble believing in) she would say "I died honey."  I am not  even sure if there is a heaven because I have been so turned off by most religions I don't know what to believe anymore but if there is a heaven I sure hope they have plenty of food and re-runs of I Love Lucy.  Oh hell, I bet if there is a heaven then Aunt Patsy is chilling with Lucille Ball as we speak.  Man, that makes me jealous because I wish I was there just to hear the shit Aunt Patsy was saying to her. I would like to think there is a heaven because if there is, I have a good chance of ending up there.  If not, then just send me where George Carlin is because we'd have a lot to talk about. But I'd like to chill with Aunt Patsy and listen to all the shit she has to say.

Oh she said a lot of shit over the years.  Stuff that would make you giggle or say WHAT THE WHAT!?  Here's a list of things Aunt Patsy told me before I reached the age of 10:

If you strain too hard on the toilet your insides will fall out.

If you put too much sugar on your Cheerios you'll get Diabetes.

Don't say 'hot dog' in front of dogs because it upsets them.

You can be here and on the Merv Griffin Show at the same time.

 Don't trust Ronald Regan.

Jimmy Carter and the Japs are out to get us.

Don't leave the butter out, cats lick the butter.

The best store in the mall is McDonald's.

I hope they serve spaghetti supper at my funeral.  (she would say that at every funeral we attended together)

I heard they did serve spaghetti in her honor.  I don't like spaghetti but Aunt Patsy sure did.  She also liked seafood and well, just about any kind of food there was.  If it was food, Patsy would eat it.  Sometimes if it wasn't food she would eat it too.  She would St. Joseph's Aspirin because she liked the taste and she once ate her own stitches.  I shit you not!  Aunt Patsy had this hideous mole on her neck that her evil oldest sister thought she should have removed.  It presented no harm to her but the evil sister thought she would look better with it removed.  Oh I wish I had a photo handy to post of Aunt Patsy because that statement about looking better would send anyone into fits of laughter after viewing that photo.  Patsy was a woman who resembled W.C. Fields with a slightly bigger nose and with fewer teeth.  So having the mole removed from her neck would be a drop in the bucket for improving her looks.

So she had the mole removed and one day she was eating a steak hoagie.  A piece of the steak hoagie fell onto the plate or so she thought.  It was actually her stitches that fell onto the plate and thinking it was a piece of the steak hoagie, she picked it up and ate it.  Moments later she realized it was not a piece of her steak hoagie but that did not bother her in the least bit.  That is just one of the crazy 45 minute stories that Aunt Patsy would tell us.   That is why I loved Aunt Patsy she told those stories about the stupid shit she would do in a very serious manner while we would all try to stifle our laughter.  Patsy was the shit!  The ultimate story teller next to my mother and Edith Bunker.   So yeah, I will miss her for that.

off to enjoy another sunny, SUNNY day!
